In the Crosscurrents series line engages with negative space creating a figure/ground surface tension. The ambiguity of space arises from placing the abstract non-dimensional element of line within a single color ground, which gives the lines a sense of pushing forward and receding simultaneously in these paintings. The lines are created from my drawings of water currents which are transferred to silkscreens and reproduced on the painting surface. Layering, superimposed multiple images, and off-registration are employed in developing that shift.
